Chiro or physio?

Should I see a chiropractor or a physiotherapist?

Author: Michael Hobbs

Clients often ask us the difference between chiro vs physio. Which is better for their problems? The answer is that it depends.

These days, there is not a lot of difference between what chiropractors, physiotherapists and osteopaths all study. In Australia, it takes 4 years in an accredited undergraduate degree to become a physiotherapist, and 5 years (3 years of undergraduate study and 2 years of postgraduate training) to become a chiropractor or osteopath. Once they have completed their training, chiropractors and osteopaths are legally allowed to call themselves Doctors of Chiropractic or Osteopathy.

The reality is that most allied health professionals are treating the same problems and looking at the same research for these problems. Therefore you may find chiropractors, osteopaths, physiotherapists and exercise physiologists all treating quite similarly.

At Cor Moves Healthcare, we try to aim for the best of all worlds: we may use chiropractic adjustments, with massage, dry needling (aka Western acupuncture) and other therapies, while also prescribing physiotherapy exercises and stretches for our clients to do in between appointments. At our clinic, no client appointment quite looks the same, as we believe each appointment should be individually tailored to that person's needs and preferences. Sometimes we might do more massage or acupuncture, at other times we might spend most of the appointment in the gym. Most commonly we do a combination of both. Some clients also have a preference for not being 'cracked', so we use alternative treatments like massage, kinesiology and active release technique instead. We also do a lot of running assessments in clinic using our treadmill and latest Arion software, and might spend the whole session working with a runner on the treadmill to get them back running again. Because of our holistic approach, we are also able to treat clients online using Telehealth. In these sessions we demonstrate the releases the clients to do on themselves, diagnose what is going on, and give them exercises and advice to get them back on track.

We feel very strongly that it's important to be adaptable to the client in front of us, to help them get back on track most efficiently. Michael has even published research on this topic, which he has won awards for, and presented at conferences around Australia, changing the way upcoming chiropractic students are educated at university.

Because of our highly individualised approach and proficient skillset, we excel in treating problems other practitioners haven't been able to solve.
